I don't have that ebook, but I do have access to his Lynda.com courses, and he makes interior lighting look easy. He only carries about 3 flashes (speed lights) with him and uses a geared tripod head with a 5d mkii. He's a great teacher and if you're really interested in interior or architectural lighting, I'd give his ebook a go. Reading the website descriptions makes me think this isn't just for beginners. If I didn't already have access to Lynda.com and knew who Scott was, I'd buy it. I may just buy it anyways.
One thing you can say about his approach is that he goes to great lengths to nail the shot in camera (or, in any case, so as to only have very minimal tweaks to do in post), using several lights and gels and flags and all that stuff to light the whole thing at once. He has to carry rollers full of bags and cases of lights and grip and spend a long time on each angle. This is a different approach from someone like Mike Kelley (or me, for that matter) that will use light, but composite the thing in post afterwards, so the capture is quite expeditive, but leaves quite a bit of work to do in Photoshop.

The Essential Guide To Lighting Interiors
Wow, I just devoured that e-book! Thanks a lot for publishing this material – it’s my new gospel and I know that some of the techniques and considerations that are brought up will make me a better photographer, without any doubt. Reading this made me realize that I need a little more equipment too, but I bet all the used sb-80s are going for 50% more than they were a few days ago, before this book was out. Next time, please tell me so I can buy my used gear before you publish – much appreciated. Dan. October 28th, 2010 at 3:40 pm.

I average about an email a day asking me for advice, coaching, or inquiring about a book, DVD, pamphlet, or other resource on lighting interiors. This book is the answer to all that. I didn’t hold back – this is the technique I employ every day on shoots. I tried to lay out as clearly as possible the theory and practical solutions that go into my photos. We’ll go into big, spacious living rooms, small bathrooms, and even into a pitch-dark, cramped little attic together, figuring out how to light them all from start to finish. It’s written with small flash (and the need to move quickly) in mind. Photographers who shoot interiors for other types of clients will find that the techniques described “scale up” perfectly well – I spent today shooting with a combination of speedlights and a more powerful pack-and-head system for a kitchen remodeling company, and the fundamentals I was relying on are the ones I put in the book. Let me know what you think! Since it’s an “eBook”, there will be updates periodically, and you’ll get every one of them for free, automatically. Many thanks to the list of people who supported this project. I’ve listed many of them in the introduction, but I have to mention and here. Larry for publishing, editing, and being incredibly patient with me as I tried to write while juggling a crazy travel and shoot schedule (and never complaining even when I made nit-pick after nit-pick over the many drafts we went through).
And Mia for being endlessly forgiving while I slowly went crazy on this project. It kind of took over my life during the past two months especially. Hit the comments – let me know if this is a hit, or a miss! Just finished the book Scott. I appreciate the hard work you obviously put into it. I caught your workshop in Raleigh, NC.
This is a great compliment to but no substitute for the workshop. The book is good for understanding your thought process. I can’t wait to put some of the new ideas into practice. I have recently realized that my work is “slipping into a rut” so maybe this will help to bring it up a notch. If you ever have another workshop in the Southeast I will do my best to be there! Howdy Scott, You and you’re crew did a great job on your Book. The only thing I have to complain about is it has cost me a considerable chunk of change$.
I know you weren’t twisting my arm. It is a lot harder then you make it look. I’m finding just figuring out how to adjust the flashes is hard for me. So far I’m using a SB 800 as commander and have a SB 600 & SB 80DX. Have another SB 80 on its way. Windows server 2008 r2 64 bit edition.
I’ll play with these for awhile and see how things go. Again Congratulations on the Book, Conrad PS We put the same back splash tile in our Kitchen! Scott Hargis is a widely recognized interiors and architectural photographer based in the San Francisco Bay area. He creates artistic photographs that communicate more than just basic information about a room or structure.
His compositions reveal the intent of the designer, interpreting their work into a two-dimensional image that accurately conveys the feeling of being in the space itself. Scott relies on traditional field techniques and attention to detail to create images that feel alive and authentic without excessive digital manipulation. View the portfolio.
